I Think I See The Problem Here
So by now I’m sure we’ve all seen the disturbing new polling numbers in the race for President; we’ve all felt the uplift in enthusiasm coming from those on the far right, with some conservative pundits already gloating that this thing is a done deal. Suffice to say that most Progressives and Liberals are feeling the heat. Maybe you’re shifting a little uneasily in your chair as you read these words? Obviously, there’s no denying that the race today has a much different complexion than it did even two weeks back. But here’s the thing – it’s not over. Not even close.
Without any doubt, the next twenty-three days will bring unprecedented advertising spending not seen in the likes of any political campaign anywhere in the world, ever, as both sides will scramble to maximize any perceived chink in the opposing armor. Momentum will dictate in any given news cycle which side is on offense, and which side is on D. At the moment however, it’s clear that a strong showing by challenger Mitt Romney in the first presidential debate yielded a bump in polling numbers that has yet to diminish. As a consequence, the candidate seems to have caught a stride and air of confidence that to date he had been lacking. For those of us on the opposite sidelines, is this a reason to worry? Well, yes and no.
What Progressives and Liberals have in our favor – call it the ace up the sleeve – is something that simply cannot be contested by anyone that’s paying attention. We have The Truth.
We have years of well documented flip-flops of position by said presidential candidate, waffling on everything from tax cuts, housing, education funding, health care, abortion, military spending – you name it, Romney has claimed both sides. His running mate Paul Ryan, not to be outdone, has earned a reputation for obliterating integrity in its entirety, pitching falsehood as fact an astounding twenty-seven well-dissected times in his RNC speech alone. They have no real ideas, and no real platform, no real substance and even less conviction, save for their unwavering commitment of furthering the wealth of the 1% on the backs of you and me.
Add to that the flat-out bizarre and unhinged views of the complete side-show of carnival freaks that are the leaders of their party, who loudly and unabashedly bark about such things as birth certificates and legitimate rape, about how slavery was a gift to the blacks and how the death penalty is a viable option for rebellious children (WTF??), and on the face of it, this thing shouldn’t even be close. So, what’s the problem?
Well consider that, for all that they DON’T have, what they DO have is a “news” channel dedicated only for one certain cause, which is to desecrate and discredit the incumbent POTUS and all his many accomplishments while simultaneously painting Romney as the Great White Hope (keyword “white”). Fox News has made an art of whipping up fear to the pallid cattle-masses of under-educated viewers who swallow it whole and then go to bed worrying the Obama secret police will kick down their doors and take their guns, or that “the gays” will be able to marry, or that some Muslim kid will show up in their local school and wear a strap-on bomb to the prom. I could go on, but you get the picture.
Remember, the entire Romney/Ryan campaign is built on nothing but lies and deception. It’s based on the concrete premise that if you spout the lies loud enough, if you repeat them often enough, they become fact. It’s a fucking shell game.
So, those on the right have all their ducks in a row. They are just cruising on autopilot, ticking the days until the polls close. As misguided as they are, as twisted as their beliefs may be, give them this: they are forthright and they are active. No, the problem here is not them. IT’S YOU.
That’s right; I said it. The problem is you. I’ve already pointed out that we have the facts on our side. You follow our page, and you’re getting all the real info. But I’m willing to bet that when your co-worker regurgitates some reprehensible nonsense about a Kenyan born Obama at the water cooler, you force a timid smile and slink back to your cubicle. I’m willing to bet that when some dainty trophy wife barfs up some drivel about gay marriage destroying the sanctity of marriage at the weekly bridge game when meanwhile you know she been divorced twice, you bite your tongue and excuse yourself to the ladies room. I’m willing to bet that when your golfing buddy proclaims loudly that “Obama gutted work requirements for welfare recipients,” you swallow it and head to the next tee-box, even though you know better.
So that’s where we’re at, people. You know what’s at stake. We are at risk of losing all of the gains of the last four years, because YOU are too afraid to speak up. You know in your heart that you want an America that promises a better future for all, you know in your heart you’re proud of what our POTUS has accomplished in such a short time; you know in your heart a second term would offer that much more promise, that much more progress, that much more hope for so many. So, if I may be so bold as to paraphrase the words of Samuel L. Jackson, STEP THE FUCK UP! Rattle some goddamned cages. SHOUT if you have to! Slam some fucking doors! THIS SHIT IS FOR REAL PEOPLE, AND THIS GAME IS FOR KEEPS! Don’t be willing to watch it disintegrate before your eyes, just because you don’t want to get your hands dirty! THE STAKES ARE WAY TOO FUCKING HIGH!
There is absolutely no doubt that this will be a close election. The margin may be razor-sharp. Sure, Obama/Biden may have your vote. But what about your elderly neighbor who was never quite sure, so isn’t going to vote, or your single mom hairdresser who’s confused on one thing or the other so she’s going to vote for Romney because her father is? Should it end in a worst-case scenario, a Romney/Ryan White House that will roll this country back 50 years, will you be able to look yourself in the mirror and know that you had done all you could do to educate those around you?
Only you can answer that.

The “truth” seems a reliable partner, but history has shown it to fail. People are easily spooked like in the Salem Witch trials; people will side with their imagined fears. The republicans are master fear mongers.
Just get off your lazy, negative, it–does–no–good–to–vote ass, and re–elect the only man who is capable of managing a complex country where understanding of both the left and right is mandatory. Obama 2012
You said it, thank you. Obama 2012.
That’s total BS! Obama talks just like the Progressives and Liberals he threw under the bus, repeatedly.
Definition of madness: Continuing to vote out of fear for the lesser of two evil fascist political parties, while expecting different results.
Our so called representatives of the Democratic-Republican Party, Inc, all bow deeply to the same gilded fascist elite masters.
The only candidate truly qualified is Jill Stein of the Green Party.
A vote for either a Democrat or a Republican is a wasted vote for fascism.
A vote for a third party is a real vote for true representation.
Couldn’t agree more!! I have stepped up, refuse to allow the spewing of lies!! I have actually lost a few friends on FB, but I was not going to change their teabag minds… what they don’t know about are all the messages I get from people asking about why I believe what I believe and because I discuss it in an appropriate and coherent manner quite a few have had a “light bulb” moment! So, I’d like to thank some of my “friends” on the right, because when you all start with the lies and offensive hate speech on my posts, my sane friends are completely and utterly turned of by you, republicans and tea baggers!
Me too, Michele-everytime I hear the lying drivel that comes out of a righty’s mouth, I toss the truth at them. I think you can guess what happens next-all of a sudden, they need to be somwhere else, or they pull another lie out of their hat. I don’t let people off the hook that easy! I am a blackjack dealer, so you can well imagine the crap I have been forced to listen to, but I drew the line when a customer said, “I just want that n****r out of the White House..” I fixed him with a gaze that could have killed, and said, “Sir, I object to that kind of language. You have a right to your opinion, but voice it over there at the bar, not on this game.” He gathered up his chips, called me a stupid liberal bitch, and went to the bar. He got thrown out for calling me names.
I think I am in love. Thank you for standing up for what you believe in. I do the same thing with people, they never have a reason for wanting Myth Rmoney in, only that they don’t want Obama in. It is just not political to say they are racist.
Good for you Amy!! I grew up with that word being tossed around with no thought and am proud to say my dad has finally seen the light and did much the same thing in a similar situation! Made me proud to know I raised him right (or left)!! LOL
I agree! I have deluged my FB page, as well as my friends. ( I have actually lost a few friends from my friends list apparently lol). I have been active in posting comments all across the board. I sent Fox news an email yesterday telling them what I thought of their “far and balanced” POS. I actually said yesterday on Politico I believe, that since the media isn’t going to hold Mitt responsible for his lying and secrecy, then it was up to us to do it. We MUST inform the misguided to research, think for themselves and NOT be fooled by the media this election. We are on our own to find the facts and thank heavens for the interwebs!
James, I keep a running political discourse via text message with three different conservative co-workers. We all want to talk about politics, philosophy, and religion, but they don’t want to talk about it in the office (I work in the field). I keep them all on their back feet (rugby term for going backwards while defending). It’s fun and they are now beginning to question the false narratives about Obama (which makes them uncomfortable). They are also beginning to take a deeper look at R-squared (Sensata’s plant in Freeport, Illinois has them worried). Will it make a difference? I don’t know, but IF we lose, I want to lose feeling that I gave it everything I had.
What about the Repub influenced companies that control the electronic voting machines? Private companies that count these votes while no one else is allowed to.. Open to fraud and hackinbg on a massive scale.. Votes have been changed before and very likely will be changed this time..These machines are outlawed in Holland because of their unreliablity.. 8,000 were destroyed by Ireland.. There’s overwhelming proof these machines have had votes changed and the most of the mainstream media remains silent as our democracy is stolen..

No man, sorry, but the problem is Obama. The problem is that he’s not exactly a very defensible politician, even when the opposition is as bogus as Romney and Friends.
When the man gets a Nobel Peace Prize, while simultaneously keeping and using a “kill list”, fighting against a federal judge to re-instate indefinite detention for US Citizens which he signed into law, but pretended to disapprove of, from drone attacks, and the murder of children in other countries to completely backtracking on his drug reform and transparency policies…
I’m sorry, but you can’t say this was all done to him by a recalcitrant Republican congress.
The man is a fucking fraud, and I’m not talking about birth certificates.
The people who have been paying attention know that NEITHER of these clowns deserve to win, and that we’re probably going to war with Iran regardless of which liar we choose.
So you go on and choose that lesser evil. Those of us who actually pay real attention to the good and bad of BOTH sides are holding out for something better. Maybe we’ll get it in 2016, if we’re not all rounded up and shot before then.
Open your fucking eyes. Obama is every bit as bad as they say, just for different reasons. And Romney is every bit as bad as you say, for precisely the reasons you stated.
There is no right choice in this election, and because of that, its a toss up between which of these two losers can lie to their followers the best.
FUCK this partisan bullshit. Vote 3rd party.
i agree with biznazz about the lies and the the fact that they both are full of shit.however, voteing third party if there is one, will only hand it to romney.third party should be started from the ground up,it will never win in this election.it has to be won in the congress and senate and your state reps first-or it will be unsucsessfull period.i would vote independant anyday if i though i wasent wasting my vote
And I bet a dollar to a donut you don’t have the chutzpah to post my comment.
Wrong. Even though we don’t agree with you and think that you are wasting your vote on your third party candidate, your post stands.
Thank you thank you! My sentiments exactly! God bless!!!_
Okay, never before have we had a president who’s validity of birth has been severely questioned.
One of my biggest questions regarding his legitimacy is, “IF” it is proved beyond a shadow of a doubt he was NOT born within the boundaries of the United States, How does it affect all of his actions, programs, signed documents, et al. Are they all null & void? And will they have to be revoked? Would it be the straw that breaks the camel’s back and results in the downfall of the democratic party?
Phlox is a pox for using the counter-factual as an invalid argument.
You actually think any of those tired, long-debunked arguments about the president’s citizenship were a.) started as a result of honest inquiry, or b.) only brought up coincidentally about the first non-white president in US history? Lawlz, tell me more about how the birther “investigation” is any more credible than World Net Daily, the conspiracy-peddling basement blog that jumps all over every nutcase “theory” from Apollo 11 hoaxes to Free Mason Reptiloid Jews running the world from a secret bunker inside the Hollow Earth with an even-more-secret tunnel connecting it to both the UN and the IMF.
Take off the tin foil plz.
Phlox – Prove it. Show me John McCain’s birth certificate and why it is more credible as having been born in the United States than Obama’s. Dissect for me the text, the folds, the raised seal, the watermarks, and explain why it is so instantly credible as to warrant no scrutiny versus Obama’s.
Obama’s mother is a US citizen, so all her offspring are US citizens regardless of where they are born. Look it up!
Heh! I’m not part of the problem – there’s not one scenario you’ve outlined here where I would smile and tolerate any of that nonsense coming out of someone’s mouth where it come to this president or this election. Polite women don’t make history. On October 27th and 28th, and again on November 6th, I will be knocking on the doors of registered Democrats in my state to ensure that they get out and VOTE. I live in Missouri, home of “Legtimate Rape” Todd Akin and I’m going to show him what a woman’s body CAN shut down – HIS CANDIDACY! Obama/.Biden 2012!
Pingback: The Black Liberal Boomer - Democrats, Liberals, Progressives: The Election is Near and the Problem is YOU
The trouble with that theory is that since people on the Right generally behaved like the programmed automatons most of them are and clearly couldn’t care less about objectivisms such as “the truth,” and since at least half the electorate seems to be made up of virtual morons who wouldn’t recognize the truth if it bit them on their backsides, truth is a far less valuable commodity than was once the case.
Thank you for this. Just as I’m starting to feel like I’m too soapboxy and political and might be alienating friends/family. We *do* have facts on our side, and we need to *not* back down from that!
I refuse to believe that half the country is so devoid of facts and soul as they can not be ‘cured’ of one of those ailments.
Romney has finally overcoming the media bias that has been dragging down. The debates have introduced Romney to a large swath of the American electorate for the first time and many of them really like what they see. This isn’t the evil, uncaring, ultra rich troll that the media and far left wingnuts had portrayed him as. He is actually a pretty likeable, affable, knowledgeable and dare I say it, Reaganesque kind of guy. This is why Romney has suddenly managed to undo any advantage Obama might of had and is now in the drivers seat heading into last 3 weeks. Romney will win this election, the only is how big of a landslide will it turn into.
